Remembering Martin

Martin truly touched the lives of many. Today I was given the opportunity to share a few words about Martin at a Memorial Mass organized by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson, an organization where Martin volunteered. Yet again I could see what an impact he had. Martin continues to amaze me, and moments like these bring me so much joy. I am so proud of him, and even prouder to be his wife.

It was truly a very special day for me in so many ways. The most memorable moment was right after I spoke. I had just sat down in my seat and the priest began to conclude the mass. Suddenly, this strong gust of wind came out of nowhere and leaves began to fall all around me. In that moment I knew Martin was there with me, giving me a hug from Heaven. A little surprise from Martin at the perfect time. I then looked up at trees swaying, smiled, and whispered "I love you too babe. Now, Forever, Always."

Here are my words about Martin that I shared with everyone today.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say a few words about Martin today.  It truly means so much to me.

When I think about Martin, I think about what a truly amazing person he was.  He was an incredible husband, father, son, friend, colleague, mentor, and so much more.  There are truly no words to express how much I miss him.   What the past six months has shown me is that Martin had such a huge impact on so many lives, and because of that his memory will truly live on forever.

Martin loved being a volunteer and was so happy that he was able to share that part of his life with me and later our daughter Elsie.   Spending time with Peter was always fun, and we always enjoyed seeing Peter get so excited about our special life events.  From getting engaged, our wedding, becoming parents, and Elsie becoming a big sister.  Martin was always excited to share the news with his friend.  I am so glad that a month before Martin fell ill, he was named volunteer of the year.  An honor that he was very proud of.

Martin was the love of my life, my teammate, and the best father to our children.   He adored Elsie and Graeme and was a very proud Papa. Martin loved playing with Elsie and making her smile.  No one could make her fly like her Papa could.  Although Graeme was young, Martin would always get down on his tummy like Graeme and try out some tummy time with him.  He also loved singing Graeme "Row Row Row Your Boat" and he could always count on Elsie to join in.  He used his goofy ways and Donald Duck voice to make the kids giggle non-stop.  Watching him be a Papa to our two little ones was incredible and it always put a huge smile on my face.  He truly was adorkable.

Martin was also very passionate about his job as a speech pathologist and loved sharing his knowledge of the field with aspiring speech pathologists. Even after a long day at work he would always come home with a big smile and loving kiss, because he was home with his family where he belonged.  We all adored Martin more than words can ever convey and he truly is our hero.

I think Elsie says it best "Mommy Papa's up in the clouds, I can't reach him." to which I always respond "yes, we can't reach him, but he will always be in our hearts."
